B2B ideal customer profile template, with examples

An ideal customer profile is only useful if a rep can build a list from it. This template turns your best customers into filters, triggers, and disqualifiers.

ICP vs buyer persona

An ideal customer profile describes the company you want to sell to. A buyer persona describes the people inside that company. You need both, but the ICP comes first because it decides which accounts are worth the effort.

The template

Fill in each field using data from your best existing customers, not from who you hope to sell to.

  • Industry or vertical, as specific as possible
  • Company size by employees and, if relevant, revenue
  • Geography and languages you can support
  • Funding stage or ownership type
  • Required tech stack or integrations
  • Trigger events that create urgency, such as a new hire, funding round, regulation, or expansion
  • The problem they are trying to solve, in their words
  • Current alternative they use today
  • Buying committee: economic buyer, champion, users, and blockers
  • Disqualifiers that rule an account out

Example: compliance software

Industry: financial services and fintech. Size: 50 to 500 employees. Stage: Series A to C. Trigger: preparing for a first SOC 2 audit or entering a new regulated market. Problem: evidence collection is manual and lives in spreadsheets. Buying committee: head of compliance as champion, CFO or COO as economic buyer, engineering as a potential blocker. Disqualifiers: already using a direct competitor on a multi-year contract.

Example: HR tech

Industry: multi-location services businesses. Size: 200 to 2,000 employees. Trigger: rapid hiring or a recent acquisition. Problem: onboarding takes weeks and varies by location. Buying committee: VP of people as champion, COO as economic buyer, IT as reviewer. Disqualifiers: fewer than five locations.

How to validate your ICP

Pull your customer list and score each account against the template. The accounts that match should have shorter sales cycles, higher contract values, and better retention. If they do not, the profile is describing who you want, not who buys.

Then interview five recent customers and ask what was happening in their business the month before they started looking. Those answers become your trigger events.

Keep it alive

Review the ICP every two quarters or after any major product change. Share it in one place, link it from your CRM, and make sure sales, marketing, and customer success use the same version.

Frequently asked questions

How many ICPs should a startup have?

One primary ICP is ideal early on. Add a second only when the first is producing predictable pipeline.

What data sources help build an ICP?

Your CRM, billing data, product usage, customer interviews, and enrichment tools for firmographics and tech stack.

Is an ICP the same as a target market?

No. A target market is everyone who could buy. An ICP is the subset most likely to buy quickly, pay well, and stay.
